A client asked me this last month while standing next to her gelding, visibly bracing for a lecture.
She’d read a forum thread where someone told her flat out that she was too heavy to ride her own horse. She wasn’t. But the conversation we ended up having was more useful than any single number could have been.
That’s the conversation I want to have here.
How Much Weight Can a Horse Carry?
Most healthy horses in good condition can comfortably carry about 20 percent of their body weight in total rider and tack weight. For example, a 1,000-pound horse would have a starting load of about 200 pounds, including the rider, saddle, and other equipment.
But 20 percent is a starting point, not a verdict.
Two horses of identical weight can have very different carrying capacity. Conformation, fitness, workload, rider balance, saddle fit, and terrain can all change how comfortably a horse handles a given load.
What Affects a Horse’s Carrying Capacity?

A 1,000-pound horse reaches 20% at a total carried load of 200 pounds. If the rider weighs 175 pounds and the saddle and tack weigh another 25 pounds, the horse is carrying 200 pounds total. That’s why saying “a 1,000-pound horse can carry a 200-pound rider” is misleading. The saddle and equipment count too.
Where the 20 percent figure comes from
The number gets repeated so often people assume it’s just tradition. Part of it is.
The U.S. Cavalry’s 1920 Manual of Horse Management set 20 percent as the working limit for military mounts carrying a rider plus full gear.
But it also has real physiological backing. Researchers at the Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute monitored horses for heart rate, breathing rate, rectal temperature, and loin muscle condition while carrying loads of 15, 20, 25, and 35 percent of their bodyweight, and found that an average adult light riding horse could comfortably carry about 20 percent of its ideal bodyweight.
Horses carrying 25 and 30 percent of their body weight showed higher heart and respiratory rates during exercise and more muscle soreness the following day.
So the rule holds up under testing. Where it gets more interesting is what the same researchers found when they looked past the raw percentage.

Body weight is not the whole story
The Ohio researchers found that loin width and cannon bone circumference were related to weight-carrying capacity. Horses with wider loins and greater cannon bone circumference showed less muscle soreness as their load increased.
That tracks with what most experienced hands already sense by eye. A short, well muscled back with substantial bone underneath simply carries more than a long back and fine legs, even at the same overall weight.
Endurance research backs this up:
- A study of conditioned Arabian endurance horses found they carried between 20 and 30 percent of their body weight over 100 mile races.
- Horses with greater body weight relative to cannon-bone circumference were more likely to experience biomechanical failure that prevented them from completing the race, according to endurance research.
Breed and type matter too. Icelandic horses, commonly ridden by full grown adults despite standing well under 14 hands, were studied carrying loads between 20 and 35 percent of their bodyweight. Researchers found no muscle soreness after one to two days of work, and most horses stayed aerobic up to a load of about 23 percent.
Beyond that, horses shift to anaerobic muscle metabolism, which builds lactic acid and leads to soreness. A horse built for load carrying has a ceiling well above 20 percent. A finer boned, longer backed horse may sit below it.
Rider weight is not the same as rider fit
This is the part most 20 percent conversations skip, and it’s the part that matters most in an exam room.
In 2019, a team led by Dr. Sue Dyson at the UK’s Animal Health Trust put four riders of different sizes on six horses, all in a standardized dressage style test, watching closely for gait changes and pain behavior.
What they found:
Rider BMI itself was not a strong predictor of outcome. The moderate weight rider and the heavier rider had similar BMI but very different results, with the moderate rider completing eleven of twelve tests and the heavier rider completing none.
The study found that larger riders were associated with temporary lameness and pain-related behavior in some horses, with rider bodyweight and position both potentially contributing.
That last point matters most. A rider who sits centered, quiet, and balanced puts a very different load through a horse’s back than a rider of the same weight who is stiff or grips unevenly. Saddle fit compounds this. A saddle that bridges or pinches concentrates pressure into small areas no matter what the total weight adds up to.
Another perspective from rider-weight research:
A Danish team led by Janne Winther Christensen at Aarhus University tested what happens when a rider’s own weight is temporarily increased with a loaded vest, rather than swapping in a larger person.
Twenty rider and horse pairs performed a standard dressage test with no added weight, then with an extra 15 percent, then an extra 25 percent of the rider’s own body weight added. The increased weight did not significantly affect the horses’ heart rate, salivary cortisol, behavior, or gait symmetry.
The likely reason: a familiar rider’s balance and position stayed consistent even as the load went up. That lines up with the Dyson findings on position mattering as much as raw weight.
Not every horse gets that same margin. A broader review of the literature found gait symmetry broke down in horses and ponies carrying between 29 and 43 percent of their bodyweight, even during short, low intensity exercise. Smaller horses and ponies can be affected at ratios a larger warmblood might tolerate without issue.

What this means for you
Start with 20 percent of your horse’s body weight: It’s well supported and a sensible baseline for an average, moderately conditioned horse.
Adjust for build: Short back, broad loin, substantial bone: often tolerates more. Narrow, long backed, or pony sized: be more conservative.
Weigh position as heavily as weight: A balanced, quiet rider in a well fitted saddle asks less of a horse’s back than an unbalanced lighter rider. A few lessons focused on seat and balance can do more for your horse’s comfort than a few pounds ever will.
Watch the horse, not just the math: Learn to spot:
- Pinned ears
- Tail swishing
- Head tossing
- An open or gaping mouth
- Reluctance to move forward
- A stride that shortens partway through the ride
These signs are more reliable in the moment than any percentage.
Condition the horse for the job. A horse legged up for light hacking isn’t automatically fit for a long trail ride or a barrel pattern, even within the same weight allowance.
When to call your vet
If your horse is sore after rides, changing gait, or resisting tacking up, that’s worth a real exam, not more guessing.
A vet can assess back and loin conformation, rule out saddle fit problems and underlying musculoskeletal issues, and give you a number specific to that horse. Weight carrying capacity is genuinely individual. A professional opinion beats another round of debate on a forum thread every time.
